Richard was born and raised on a small family farm in Star, NC. He completed his Bachelor’ and Master’ degrees at NC State University and began an exemplary career that lasted 38 years. He was the first in the state to expand Horse 4-H Clubs and School Enrichment Embryology programs, promoted the 4-H agent position as a viable Extension career track, developed innovative teen leadership retreats, and elevated the role of district 4-H officers at State Congress. He tirelessly supported his colleagues and their professional development, and enriched the lives of countless 4-Hers. From developing unique programs for urban settings, supporting youth with their demonstration contests, and taking 4-Hers to camp each summer, Richard was a hands-on leader.
Richard organized the first NC affiliate of the NAE4-HA, served as the first NCAE4-HA president, served in many subsequent leadership roles, and developed the association’ constitution and bylaws. His goals were always to elevate and support the professionalism of Extension 4-H Agents through visionary leadership, fundraising, and exceptional professional standards while never losing sight of his mission to develop 4-H youth as caring, productive, responsible citizens. After his retirement, Richard continued 4-H philanthropy as a member of the NC 4-H Development Fund Board, contributed personally via gifts to support awards at the state level, and established a 4-H camp endowment for camperships to Camp Millstone.
