    Hartford, NY

I became a 4-H member in Washington County NY at age 10 when my family moved to rural Hartford.  This became quickly “home” after moving from Georgia to Austria and back as a child in a military family.  Joining 4-H was a huge part of making this new community become a real home. Being a member of a 4-H Club meant not only learning new skills but enjoying a wide range of personal development experiences that helped me learn leadership and collaborative abilities. One of my favorite 4-H opportunities was the annual demonstration and public presentation program. Practicing speaking and receiving feedback in a public arena early in life served me well throughout my career.

After completing a BS degree at SUNY Albany, I chose to serve with US Army Special Services in Vietnam for three years before beginning my career as a 4-H Youth Development professional.  I often reflect that my 4-H experience built leadership skills and the time in Vietnam strengthened my experience and resolve to dedicate my life to reaching underserved populations and building collaboration with people of different cultures and competing interests. I have traveled widely over the years, continuing to learn from people of different cultures and life experiences.

Each person I have met and each experience in 4-H over a lifetime career has enriched my ability to bring value to my community.  I continue to volunteer in the local community through a group that offers “helping hands” to neighbors who may need simple home repairs, transportation, a meal or other support.
