4-H never had a better friend than Peggy Adkins. Peggy chaired NAE4-HA’ first Legislative Update on Youth at Risk. The intent was to build legislative understanding of 4-H’ ability to work with youth living in “” situations. Peggy led the charge and on behalf of NAE4-HA worked with a lobbyist to engage each state to communicate their work with children, youth, and families at risk. The effort succeeded in securing $10 Million dollars for what is now known as CYFAR (Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk). Peggy is an international citizen. She has hosted students from five countries and traveled extensively to 11 countries while teaching Character Counts!
As NAE4-HA President, Peggy was a member of the 250 person U.S. delegation for the first African/African American Summit in Ivory Coast, West Africa. Working with Dr. Leon Sullivan, organizer of the Summit, she insured that 4-H was an active participant of the planning committee and lead the Summit youth development efforts. As a State 4-H Specialist, Peggy was known for her curriculum development expertise and authored the TAXI volunteer system development curriculum. She developed a train-the-trainer model and traveled to numerous states to insure the successful implementation of TAXI. Peggy also served NAE4-HA as editor of News and Views and on the 40th Anniversary Committee.
