Branen grew up on a small southern Idaho farm where he was an 11-year 4-H member. He was a leader at the local, county and state levels serving as state 4-H Vice President. He attended National 4-H Club Congress as state dairy winner. He graduated in food science from the University of Idaho and Purdue University.
Branen remained active in 4-H as a leader and parent, but his most active involvement has been as the dean of the University of Idaho College of Agriculture. As dean he is an active spokesperson and advocate for 4-H and is a frequent speaker to youth groups around the state.

My life was transformed through 4-H. There is no question that my excitement and appreciation for agriculture and 4-H was stimulated by effective volunteer leaders and county agents and led to my career in higher education. Active involvement as a leader in club, county and state 4-H programs gave me the confidence and experience to serve in other leadership roles. The 4-H motto, “Making the best better”, has been a major motivator for me throughout my career.
