I do not remember choosing to join 4H it was just what my family did together.
I started showing steers in the 3rd grade, youngest in the county show, and showing
horses at age 10. My sister and I were very successful at all levels. I had Grand
Champion steers, and was State Champion in both the Junior and Senior levels in the
horse competition. I was a member of a district winning horse judging team and
exceled in my leadership and communication projects. I enjoyed several of the popular
Georgia 4H camps including the competitive horse camp on the campus of the
University of Georgia and loved every minute I spent at the famous Rock Eagle 4H
Summer Camp.
But 4H is not just about the projects, the competition or the even winning. It is really
about the experiences, the opportunities, the learning and the growing as a person. I
credit my involvement in 4H for so many important life lessons that have helped me be
a better person, a strong leader, and an engaged citizen. Hard work, responsibility,
commitment, giving back are all teachings from my years in 4H. When I was given the
opportunity to support 4H as an official at USDA or asked to serve on the National 4H
Council yes was an easy answer. I want to help make sure all young people have the
same opportunities I did. No matter where they live, their interests, or talents….4H can
make a difference in their lives and future.
