After 32 years as an Extension Agent, State Specialist and State 4-H Program Leader, Joe Myers served for another 30 years after retirement as a volunteer and member of the advisory committee for the Oregon 4-H Conference and Education Center. He has been on the 4-H Center Advisory Committee since its inception in the early 80’s. As chair of the facilities sub-committee he has organized many “work parties” to help modernize, build, or re-build countless facilities at the 4-H Center. Joe is an expert at recruiting other retirees to spend a day or a week at the 4-H Center to complete projects, which have included everything from painting cabins to remodeling and expanding the dining hall.
Because of his expertise and his dedication to the 4-H Center, Joe was asked to serve on the 4-H Foundation’s Center Development Committee since its creation in 1996. As program leader, he kept the focus on the needs of boys and girls. He was a leader during the formative years of the Japanese 4-H Exchange program, and to this day Oregon 4-H has hosted as many Japanese students as any other state in the United States. Joe was also very involved with other international education programs and staff exchanges.
