John grew up on a farm near Sutton, WV and was a Braxton Co. 4-H member. He began his career in extension in 1956 in Barbour County as 4-H agent. From 1966-76, he had a dual role as 4-H agent in both Barbour and Taylor Counties. The camping experience was an important part of John’s 4-H life. He attended camps as a camper, volunteer and director. Based on his experiences, he believes that the value of the camping experience for youth development is invaluable. The experiences of spending a week with other youth and adult volunteers, providing leadership, taking part in discussions and participating in council circle programs are irreplaceable.
John was involved in the WV and national 4-H Agent associations during his career. He was part of the major NAE4-HA expansion in the mid-60′ and early 70′, serving as National Secretary from 1969-71 and Seminar Chairman for the 1969 national meeting in WV. He recruited states that had not yet participated to become members and attend the national meeting. Two of John’ other major interests were leader training and developing a county fair to enable youth to exhibit livestock. The Barbour Co. Fair livestock exhibits have grown from 7 market steers to 67 market steers, hogs, lambs and goats. John was the fair treasurer at its inception in 1976. He became president in 1978 and continues in that role through 2016.
