Gladys Conant is starting her 65th year as a 4-H leader in Oxford County. She is the organizational leader for the Canton Busy Workers, a club of over 70 youth and 20 assistant leaders. Canton Busy Workers has been a club for 75 years. Gladys took over the organizational leadership of the club from her husband, J. Carlton Conant. Gladys was recognized in 1978 at Oxford County Fair as Outstanding 4-H Leader and again in 1994 at Fryeburg Fair as Outstanding 4-H Leader. Gladys is active in the Oxford County LeadersҠAssociation, chair of the Eastern States Center program and county Style Revue program.
Gladys was the spark behind the beginning of Maine demonstrating at the Eastern States Center program over 25 years ago. She has done hundreds of projects with thousands of 4-H members over the years. Canton Busy Workers exhibit over 400 projects each year at the fair, are active in the community, and recognized as a valuable contributor to a healthy community in the Canton area. Gladys began the first teen exchange group in Oxford County. Gladys is a truly remarkable person and has been recognized on many occasions for her contributions to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and 4-H.
