Dick Sauer served at President and CEO of National 4-H Council from January 1989 to July 2000. His tenure was marked by a fierce commitment to the development of supportive environments for culturally diverse youth and adults that would enable them to reach their fullest potential. Employing innovative approaches to youth development also defined Dick’ work and remains central to Council’ work today.
Dr. Sauer earned a B.S. degree from St. John’ University in Minnesota, an M.S. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from North Dakota State University. Prior to joining Council, Dr. Sauer spent twenty-three years of his career in formal education settings, including 8 1/2 years at the University of Minnesota serving at various times as Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station; Vice President for Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics; and Interim University President.
