Duane Duncan

    4-H has been a part of Duane’s life since the age of 12. He had several projects, including swine and tomatoes. Early in his 4-H career, he knew that he wanted to be a County Agent. Duane served as a 4-H Summer Assistant in Lawrence County in 1957, where he met his wife. He graduated from Penn State in 1958 and started working two days later in Adams County as an Assistant County Agent working mainly with 4-H. In 1967 Duane was promoted to Cumberland County Extension Director, where he continued to work with 4-H horse and dairy programs until retirement in 2003 after 45 years of service. Duane led the development of Farm Safety Day for youth.

    Duane also led successful 4-H Farm Safety Quiz Bowl Teams in competitions held at Ag Progress Days and the PA Farm Show. He continues as a coach of this team. Duane served as Secretary of the PA Junior Dairy Show from 1972 to 1991 and was recognized for lifetime commitment at the 50th Annual show in 2005. In 1974 he established and continues as Superintendent of the All-American Dairy Show 4-H and FFA Youth Dairy Forum. Duane has served as treasurer of the PA 4-H Horse Program Development Committee since 1980, is on the Board of Directors of Therapeutic Riding Association of Cumberland County, and is a liaison to the Carlisle Rotary Club.

    I had the opportunity to work with many of the best 4-H volunteers, youth, and extension people. Their dedication, leadership and commitment had an impact on the quality of life of families and communities. 4-H encourages and empowers young people to try new ideas, and improve and develop their skills in leadership, subject matter and relationships. A goal of mine was to help youth learn ways to help themselves develop a vision, set a course of action and accomplish their goals. I believe anyone can complete a task if they put their mind to it, and can excel in what they do.
