Bill’s 4-H career began in Henry County, IN, where he participated in clubwork at all levels. He taught high school science before joining Purdue University as a rural 4-H youth/young adult consultant. While pursuing his doctorate at Ball State University, Bill served as a District 4-H Specialist. He accepted the first Kellogg Internship at the National 4-H Center and returned to Purdue University as assistant department chair.
Beginning in 1975, he served as Nebraska state 4-H leader and assistant director and led numerous paid and volunteer staff development efforts. Bill chaired the ECOP 4-H sub-committee and worked on national documents.
