Alvin Davis became a 4-H member in Garza Co. TX in 1939 with one gilt as a project. His projects later expanded to include beef and dairy cattle, field crops, farm safety, livestock judging, wildlife preservation, grass judging, riflery, swine, achievement and leadership. He won trips to National 4-H Congress in Chicago for his overall project record in 1943, State Field Crops winner in 1947 and National Boys 4-H Leadership Award and Moses Trophy winner as Top 4-H Boy in 1948. He was a junior leader for many years and sometimes did the work of a County Agent when the position was vacant. He became a 4-H leader in two counties and helped 4-H whenever possible. He received the Texas 4-H Alumni Award for his dedicated service.
As an adult, Alvin had a 14-year banking career, ending it as Executive Director and Director of two national banks. He had a 27-year career in western wear and equipment retailing, including service as Founding President of Western/English Retailers of America. He also served for 13 years as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Ranching Heritage Center. After retirement, he has been the Founder and Chairman of the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. He has been honored in the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame, Who’ Who in Texas, Who’ Who in America, Who’ Who in the World, National Cowboy Song and Poetry Hall of Fame and the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.
